The Blue Lagoon between Comino and Cominotto — pale turquoise water over white sand, enclosed by low limestone headlands

When to go to the Blue Lagoon, and when not to

The Blue Lagoon sits in the channel between Comino and Cominotto. It is genuinely as clear as the photographs suggest. It is also, between about ten in the morning and four in the afternoon in July and August, extremely crowded.

The timing problem

The scheduled ferries run to a timetable, and that timetable concentrates several hundred people into one small bay at the same time. A private charter does not make the bay bigger. What it changes is when you arrive.

  • Before about 09:30, the lagoon is close to empty
  • From roughly 10:00 to 16:00 in high season, it is busy
  • After about 16:30 it empties again, and the light is better

What else is worth seeing

Most skippers will suggest combining the lagoon with somewhere quieter:

  1. Santa Marija Bay, on the north side of Comino
  2. The Crystal Lagoon, which is deeper and less sheltered
  3. Ġorba, off the western coast, when the wind allows
Whether any of these is reachable on the day depends on the wind. A skipper who says no to Comino in a strong northwesterly is doing their job.

Getting there

Most boats leave from Msida or from Mġarr on Gozo. Comino itself is a Natura 2000 site — see the Environment and Resources Authority for what that means for anchoring and for the protected areas.

Questions

What is the quietest time to visit the Blue Lagoon?
Before about 09:30 or after about 16:30 in high season. The scheduled ferries concentrate visitors between roughly 10:00 and 16:00, so arriving outside that window makes more difference than the size of your boat.
Can you get to the Blue Lagoon from Gozo?
Yes. Comino sits between Malta and Gozo, and boats leave from Mġarr on the Gozo side as well as from the Malta marinas.
