Malta & Gozo

Where to sail from

Charter boats in Malta leave from a handful of marinas, and which one you are standing in matters more than it sounds. Two of them are on the same harbour, minutes apart. One of them is on the other island.

Your operator gives you the berth and the meeting time — a marina name on its own is not an address, and the bigger ones are long enough to walk for ten minutes at the wrong end of.

Picking between them

Msida and Ta' Xbiex are the same harbour

They sit across the creek from each other at the head of Marsamxett, close enough that arriving at the wrong one is a routine mistake rather than an unlucky one. Check which side your operator means before you set off.

Mġarr is on Gozo

Not a different part of Malta — a different island, reached by the Ċirkewwa ferry. Starting there puts Comino and the Gozo coast within easy reach, and adds roughly half a day either side if you are staying on Malta.

Portomaso starts on open water

It faces the sea rather than sitting inside a harbour, so a departure begins on open water instead of working out through harbour traffic first. Marginally closer to the run north.

Grand Harbour is a working port

The most photographed water in Malta and also commercial water. A skipper leaving from here is navigating around real traffic, which is part of why some boats are based elsewhere and run in for the harbour itself.
