A day on a boat with children can be the best day of the holiday or a long exercise in supervision, and the difference is mostly decided before you leave the marina — by which boat, which water, and a couple of questions asked at booking.
Skippered, almost certainly
The strongest single recommendation on this page: with children aboard, take a skippered charter. It is not about competence — it is arithmetic. On a bareboat, the most capable adult is handling the boat; on a skippered one, that same adult is free to watch the children. A skippered day charter turns the parent back into a parent.
Pick the water, not just the boat
Children change what a "good" stop is:
- Mellieħa Bay is the easy answer — the biggest sandy bay on the island, shelving so gently that you can be a long way out in water a child can stand in.
- St Peter's Pool is the opposite trip: deep, clear water straight off flat rock, with people jumping in from height. Wonderful with confident teenage swimmers; a very different proposition with a four-year-old.
Neither is "the right one" — they are different days, and it is worth saying which kind you want when you enquire so the skipper plans accordingly.
Shade is the thing people underestimate
A Maltese summer day on open water is relentless, and children fare worst in it. A boat with a bimini, a hard top or a cabin is a materially different day out from an open RIB. Ask the operator plainly what shade the boat has — it is a better predictor of how the afternoon goes than almost any other spec.
Shorter is often better
Half days exist and are frequently the right call. A full day is long for small children, and much of a Comino run from the Malta side is passage time — sitting, not swimming. Ask about lifejackets — specifically child sizes
Operators carry lifejackets. What is worth confirming when you book is that child sizes will be aboard for your party — a boat carrying adult sizes only is a real possibility, and it is a five-second question in an email. Rules on children afloat vary and are the operator's to know: where any requirement might apply, ask them rather than relying on anything you read, here included.
Tell the operator the children's ages in your first message. Everything above gets easier when they know who is coming.
